My First Reel-To-Reel Tape Recorders

My Dad had a super hi-fi set-up with a Tandberg stereo tape recorder that his younger brother Bill scored two of in the early 60s. I got to mess around with it and especially remember accidentally threading Jimi Hendrix's "Axis Bold As Love" BACKWARDS and tripping out. I also remember some experimental drone tape with slowed down metal trash can banging, that he brought home in late 60s done by students at the college where he taught chemistry. In the early 70s he gave the Tandberg to me, but I sold it in the late 70s when I lived in California.

Somewhere in around 1967, I got my very own tape recorder. It was a General Electric mono machine that could run on batteries and had a separate microphone built-in microphone. Whatever space I had available (bedroom, garage, living room etc) was my studio. The recorders and all my tapes from both are sadly long gone. A few years ago, I bought the exact same GE recorder in another one of my BTM childhood dream flashbacks.

Then around 1975, I scored a REVOX 77-A Reel to Reel. I really wanted a STUDER multi-track or at the very least one of those 4-track Teac machines, but the Revox popped up on a gently used deal. It has a kool sound on sound feature. (later I found out Robert Fripp was using two of them for his Frippertronics experiments.) I still have that exact ReVox machine today. I even have a few of the original (unreleased tapes) that i transferred into Pro Tools. Since I was freelancing at bigger studios, my ReVox and Strat guitars and my ARP Odyssey were the core of my private studio until the early 80s. Then I scored a Fostex 80-8 8-Track and eventually a Fostex 16-Track and 2-Track.

Still dreaming of owning a STUDER muli-track machine and a NEVE console and mixdown to a half-track 2-track Studer. Same dream I have had since 1975. Would love to have that linked to a deluxe HD Pro Tools rig. Dreams do come true.... sometimes.

KrautRock Synth Flashback Overload... with Cupcakes.

BTM is deep in a krautrock flashback overload zone while tinkling the ivories of moog/arp synthz and dreaming of an ocean of melted tones of archived madness.... and eating cupcakes. Can you dig it, man?

I scored my first keyboard on my second birthday in 1958 and then eventually a Magnus Chord Organ (when i was in The Electric Onion band) in 1969 and then a Ace Tone Organ in 1971 and then at Arp Odyssey ('74 white panel model) in 1976 and a Roland JX-8P in 1983 and then MOOG Taurus Bass pedals (found in the trash around 1996 at rehearsal complex, which just needed power supply adapter wired in.) Then I started collectin a mountain of Casios and assorted circuit bent toy keyboards and software synths from late 90s onward. Still want more more more.

My Dad had been a hi-fi enthusiast since the late 40s and turned me onto Switched on Bach by Walter Carlos. I also caught snips of theremin and synth sci-fi tweakage on the tube in the late 60s as well. After years of British Invasion and recycled blues and assorted hippie trippy sounds i needed more indulgent sounds with less vocals. I started exploring all those euro prog-ish bands (in all flavors from King Crimson, Hawkwind, Nektar, Gentle Giant to the more obvious, ELP, Yes, Genesis, seeing ALL of them live in concert at some point) starting back when I was teenager around 1970. Somewhere about 1973-74 got turned onto CAN, Amon Duul II, Kraftwerk. But ya know it it really was the portamento glide into that bass resonance on Keith Emerson's Lucky Man solo that I just couldn't get out of my mangus chord organ, that kick-started the quest.

In 1976, I scored my Arp Odyssey and along with my guitar bouncing delay into a Revox A-77 reel to reel I started to create music in that sort of synthy space realm. A few short recordings from that era survived and will be released at some point. I only wish I had recordings my early Electric Onion (68-70 era) solo freak-out guitar verb feedback excursions (and on one weekend I even had a sine wave oscillator, my dad checked out of his lab.) Lost sonic memories.

It took me to until the early 90s to really hear Karlheinz Stockhausen, Einstürzende Neubauten, Holger Czukay solo and eventually re-discovering the golden era of CAN... digging way deep into that space. It wasn't until recently that I got to actually HEAR bands I had HEARD OF forever like, Faust, Neu!, Cluster, Ash Ra Tempel, (early) Tangerine Dream, Conrad Schnitzler, and truly grew to appreciate Producer Conny Plank.

This DVD documentary... Kraftwerk and the Electronic Revolution was the trigger for my recent excursion.

OK... enough flashback distractions, gotta get back to video editing the ORGY OF NOISE Live in Concert Halloweeny TTs DVD footage.

Current Mode: Video Editing ORGY OF NOISE with Final Cut Pro

Stay tuned for HIT SINGLE video clip from second set and eventually (?) a full DVD of the Multimedia Circus show with bonus studio session videos and still photo galleries. Right after the HIT SINGLE VID is released, I am going back to finish up the editing for the TT's Halloween show DVD and then get back to the OON Circus DVD. Then much later edit the Cyberarts, Bunny Brunch, Lizard Lounge, Strange Maine, and Noise Night gigs. At least that's THE PLAN.

MMMMM.... CAMPARI !

Trying to convince my brain and stomach that these campari tomatoes are as good as cookies and bananas are as good as ice cream and apples are better than cake... and orange juice is like a chocolate milkshake and avocado is like pecan pie and humus is like... well you get the idea. Kinda working.

I have been lucky enough to see PJ three times. All three were on the same stage. First time was at Avalon in Boston on 2.11.98. I have no snapshotss, but here's the set list from that show.

1998-11-02, - AVALON BALLROOM - BOSTON, MA, U.S.A.
Set List- Catherine / Rope Bridge Crossing / Civil War Correspondent / Taut / Joy / Electric Light / A Perfect Day Elise / Hook / Meet Ze Monsta / My Beautiful Leah / City Of No Sun / Angelene / Missed / Joe / Snake. Encore#1- Heela / Is This Desire?. Encore#2- The Garden / The Sky Lit Up / To Bring You My Love.

I wish I could have seen her during the RID OF ME era. Her Man-size video and her solo appearance playing Lick My Thighs and being interviewed on Jay Leno's Tonight(93) back then are still among my favorite PJ highlights.
